I finally set up one of my turntables at home again and thought I'd rip/remaster some vinyl like the good ol' days. Most of my disco/boogie/dance collection has already been done so I thought I'd get into some of the harder to find hip-hop stuff, 12" instrumental versions in particular. I really wanted this mix a be different from anything I’ve done in the past. With my radio show (One Day Later) I’ve been fortunate enough to share the music I love for the last 5 years, so doing a mix series like White Light was not a huge departure from mixes I’ve done in terms of musical freedom. With that in mind I decided to take a more literal approach to the theme’s of space, night driving and introspection. I wanted to go deeper musically and tell a story at the same time, try to think of the cover art as a poster to a film you have yet to watch. I hope you enjoy it, thanks for listening!

2009 proved to be another great year for music ("The Best Of 09'" edition of ODL is on it's way!) not only for new music but for rediscovering older music. When ever I feel as if I've heard it all, I come to find out that I've only just scratched the surface. This music goes deeper then I could have ever imagined, and that is what inspires me to keep digging and evolving musically. Even more important then the music itself is the friendships and experiences that are a direct result of it, I'm so grateful for this gift and that is why I enjoying sharing it as much as possible.

As a gift to you I've put together some of my favorite boogie/funk/disco/edits/soul tracks from the past year, some classic, some rare, some weird, all amazing. Enjoy!

The first single by one of the finest boogie/modern-soul groups ever, the first two albums are essential.

Con Funk Shun - Too Tight 1980

This is some feel good funk music right here, always gets a smile. Sneak it in after Earth, Wind and Fire's "September".

Dee Dee Sharp - Nobody Could Ever Take Your Place (Funkhunt Re-Cut) 1977

The Philly sound at it's best imo, beautiful.

Elvis Presley - Crawfish (Pilooski Edit) 2008

One of the most amazing edits I've heard, perfectly executed and gets better as the track progresses, by the 4:40 mark you completely forget that this is Elvis Fucking Presley! Pilooski is a master of the edit no doubt.

Greyship Daviz - This Groove Is On The Loose 1983

This track starts of with some seriously heavy open drums and a synth bass drop that almost sounds like an 808 bass drum (heeeaaavy) then proceeds to smash your head with insane synth leads and a deep Funkadelic style groove. Shout outs to Trevor Risk for putting me up on this one.

James Brown - Can't Take It With You 1976

Christmas aka James Brown Day! Kind of a lesser known JB track that goes hard. If I ever DJ a B-Boy battle I will drop this without hesitation.

Jimmy Bo Horne - Is It In 1980

My recent obsession has been anything Harry Wayne Casey & Richard Finch produced for other artists between (1975-80).

This remix has nothing to do with 808's at all. It was originally a remix for an R&B artist but wasn't what they were looking for, they wanted a heavier, electro/club mix or something. Here is the full instrumental. I've seen a couple shitty myspace rips of the track going around so please trash those. Special thanks to Kutcorners for his live bass and Kevin Mah for his additional synth work, you're both amazing. That catchy riff from Chaka Khan's "Fate" was the main inspiration for this track. Just went through my hard drive today and found a ton of material that has never been released. I've decided to share this music because it is doing no good to any one by staying locked away on my computer.

In the past year I've been some what tied up with trying to please a major label by remixing horrible songs and attempting to give them the sound they're looking for (which is 808 drums and corny 3 note synth lines in case you're wondering!). As a result much of the music that was made has been passed up because it was not fit for "urban radio". I'm still puzzled as to how my remix of Britney's "I U Seek Amy" ever slipped through the cracks, I was sure they would pass on it. Anyways, here's part 1...

Kelley Polar is probably best known for his collaborative work with Metro Area front man Morgan Geist. His string arrangements were the highlights of records like "Miura" and "Caught Up" and instantly made me grab every single Metro Area release I could at the time. This EP is essentially a continuation of that early Environ sound as it was released in close proximity to the MA releases. This is striped down analog disco/boogie at it's finest, pure class. Lifelike has been one of my favorite producers and an inspiration for quite some time. I first heard his music through a friend on the Daft Crew website and the Soulseek group (this is where all the french house heads traded music back then). The following are his first releases on vinyl, you'll notice that his style has changed considerably since these records came out. His music had a much more funky/disco vibe then his newer releases which tend to be deeper sounding electro with heavy 80's sounding drums (amazing).

I've ripped them as .wav files for the best sound quality possible, and did a little remastering to get the levels up. I'm pretty sure you will not find better quality versions of these tracks anywhere else, unless they get digitally rereleased at some point in the future. Enjoy!

Dam-Funk is one of my favorites. As a DJ/Musician/Person he has been killing it lately, and people are starting to take notice. The thing I admire most about this guy is not his music production or amazing record collection, but his refreshing attitude towards the music he loves and his dedication to exposing and sharing funk/boogie music with the world. It is rare that a record enthusiast/producer of his level is as humble and willing to share as he is. Dam regularly gets on the mic while playing a set to tell you exactly what records he is playing (artist/label/year), you won't see him covering up his rare records or leaving his Serato screen blank so others won't know what he's playing. He also has a five part album (Epic!) titled TOEACHIZOWN to be released soon (Part 1 is out now). This guy is the real thing.

In tribute to the king of pop I wanted to make a more playable version of this amazing demo/unreleased track "Hot Street", so nothing over-the-top production-wise here, just added some crisper sounding drums, extended the song and remastered it. To me this is a near perfect disco house tune. An excellent sample choice (D.C. LaRue's loft classic "Cathedrals") and just enough production to make sound great on a bigger system. The song was released back in 2004 but I still love dropping it in my sets on the regular, that loop never gets old to me.

Q-Tip's "Manwomanboogie" Featuring Amanda Diva was one of the better tracks off his latest release, there was something about the bass line and groove that really made it stand out to me. Not to say it's at all innovative or groundbreaking, just a solid jam. So I was randomly listening to some of my favorite Can songs last week and heard the original source.

I realize how cliche sample spotting in 2009 is (roughly 10 years late), but this a great track and Can rules. Enjoy...

The infamous Moodymann is back with his new EP "Det.Riot" which should be in stores very soon (go BUY it!). The first track off the EP "Freeki MF" is simply incredible, it's one of those tracks that takes a couple listens at first, the groove is deep, funky and the lyrics are infectious. It sounds cliche but you can really feel the spirit of early Detroit/Chicago House in his music, and it's refreshing to hear dance music that doesn't smash you in the face with over compression, distortion and trite lyrics.

El Michels Affair continues to be one of the finest funk/soul bands on the planet. If you heard their brillant cover versions of The Wu-Tang Clan's classic "C.R.E.A.M" and Raekwon's "Glaciers Of Ice" then you know the deal. Their latest offering Ultimate Breaks & Beats "Instrumentals" is no acception. I was a little scared at first when I saw songs like "I Know You Got Soul" by Bobby Byrd (RIP) but they managed to pull it off with class, no easy feat! Go out and buy this disc right away, and make some B-Boys lose their shit when they hear the "Funky Worm" minus the vocals!
